'Kulbardi Season' creates a new Perth landmark embedded with Indigenous significance and pays homage to the native Kulbardi, the Magpie.
The unique 3D mural artwork uses the Perth Transport Operations Control Centre facade as its canvas to reflect nature and communicate a sense of belonging. Drawing a talented team of artists together through a collaborative design process, the artwork uses a public asset to create a culturally rich legacy for the precinct.
Kulbardi Season represents connection – connecting people through transit and connecting people to the landscape with First Nations symbolism. The mural includes Indigenous sand marking designs and heroes the Kulbardi, a totem of protection, refuge and vitality.
The artists also drew inspiration from the golden Western Australian sun, steering the choice of colours and materials to catch the sun’s glow across the metallic 3D feathers. The metal elements are set out from the facade to create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow as the sun moves throughout the day. Various finishes were applied to the feathers to provide different surfaces and ways to interact with the light. Flowers in the mural are strategically placed in a constellation layout, referencing connection of communities through the skies and stars.

Art, cultural connection and history create a powerful impact, and when government leadership invests in creating public legacies; the result is a creative expression that galvanises communities and connection to place.
Kulbardi Season is a modern interpretation of ancient stories using contemporary materials and methodologies. Harnessing the opportunity to learn about the artists’ practices and inspiration, ensures that First Nations knowledge and creativity are embedded in the contemporary urban landscape.
“The theme that we’ve explored in the paint treatment is a lot to do with connection. It’s connection of people through transit and the connection of people through stories.”
– KAMSANI BIN SALLEH, artist
