Centred between two residential apartment buildings, Nadia Odlum’s, Through Flow, activates a walkway. The geometry of the surrounding buildings is continued, as the sculpture experiments with parallel lines. The series of lines is designed to encourage playful movement and sparks curiosity among locals and creates a space to gather and interact.
Through Flow consists of three components that create a sculptural play between two and three-dimensional forms. A sculptural archway invites people to walk through, while the street furniture, a set of tables and benches, works as a place for the community to gather. The graphic lines continue into the ground plane, creating a visual interplay between the elements.
“The artwork’s sinuous forms reflect on walking as a kind of thinking-in-motion, inviting a reconsideration of urban traversal as a generative, creative process.”
Nadia Odlum, Artist
Tilt was commissioned to develop the design and technical aspects of the artwork. Our team studied Nadia’s maquette closely to achieve the same scale and design outcome. We then translated this maquette into a 3D computer model, which was refined and could be integrated into the ground plane artwork.
The 3D components comprise 316 bead-blasted stainless steel tubes with a 60mm diameter that are welded and bolted to the ground plane.
Tilt translated the design by aligning the poles perfectly during installation to achieve the desired slanted angle. This also involved integrating the poles into the ground plane and ensuring the painted lines flowed with precision. Tilt specified StreetBond a durable coating system for the ground plane artwork, contributing to cost savings and a well-resolved installation.
Through Flow is an impressive installation that enlivens a typical residential laneway, creating an unexpected diversion from everyday life. Its twisted forms spark curiosity and encourage engagement, adding character to this growing urban community. When viewed from above, it forms an exciting outlook for the residents of the neighbouring high-rise buildings.
“Tilt’s skilled, creative work with artist Nadia Odlum was integral to realising this engaging, complex urban artwork. Tilt’s combination of technical expertise and respect for the artist’s vision is a consistently successful part of public art projects.”
