'The Ribbon' in Darling Harbour is a new icon of Sydney’s premier waterfront and signals the gateway to the Darling Quarter entertainment districts. The award-winning Ribbon development features the five-star W Hotel, IMAX Theatre, and playground in the forecourt.
Designed by ASPECT Studios, the playground is an immersive 2,000 sqm play space that caters to children of all ages and provides amenities for parents and carers. Nestled beneath the Western Distributor, the playground provides vital shade for its users, an active play space for older children and unifies the space amongst the freeway columns.
The maritime-inspired playground features climbing structures, elevated bridges, tunnels and rope platforms linking the play zones and creating a multi-tiered experience.

With extensive experience in delivering playgrounds, Tilt collaborated with Aspect Studios to provide design consultation to develop the concept. A design feasibility study was then undertaken to assist Aspect in minimising risk and budget control. Tilt then progressed the concept through the detailed design phase, producing documentation for tender and construction.
The playground’s location presented several challenges that Tilt investigated and integrated into the project program. Its close proximity to the foreshore required special consideration for material deliveries, and planning for construction around the structural freeway columns and multiple onsite contractors required detailed coordination from Tilt.

The Ribbon Playground contributes significantly to Sydney’s liveability by offering premium amenities for both locals and visitors. The playground is the result of a successful collaboration among skilled industry professionals, each bringing their expertise to create a revitalized play area that enhances the precinct.
“With around 27 million visitors a year it’s important that the NSW Government continues to revitalise Darling Harbour as a modern, accessible and enjoyable precinct with plenty of open space for recreation and play. We are thrilled with the new playground designed by ASPECT Studios which caters to older children and teenagers and complements the playground for smaller children. The new playground doubles the size of the existing playground and has been enthusiastically welcomed by families from all over Sydney.”
Anita Mitchell, Chief Executive of Placemaking New South Wales.
