ORBIT - a laneway activation for Wollongong's Globe Lane adding vibrancy and transforming it into an engaging community space.
Developed by Office Feuerman, ORBIT comprises three unique placemaking elements that pay homage to the laneway’s rich history and the Globe Theatre that once stood at the laneway’s entrance. Tilt supported Office Feuerman through the concept design, detailed design, fabrication and installation process.
The first element, a towering illuminated wayfinding sign that stands 4.5m high, serves as a striking visual landmark during both the day and in the evening.
The second and third elements are two circular benches that provide comfortable seating for visitors, whilst also adding a sleek and contemporary design to the laneway’s visual appeal.
The design approach for all elements was to develop a kit of parts that utilised highly robust materials and finishes that facilitated the embedment of subtle graphic detailing and provided for ease of installation and future maintenance of the assets.
Together, these three elements breathe new life into Globe Lane. With its lively mix of live music, vintage retailers, eateries, and bars, ORBIT serves as a fitting tribute to Globe Lane’s 200-year history, while also providing a contemporary and engaging space for the community to enjoy and is a testament to the power of placemaking and its ability to reinvigorate urban areas.
