Suspended directly above the performance space, the lighting bar acts as a functional statement piece. Its unique design adaptive for the required tone, mood, and atmosphere on stage.
As a focal piece in the performing arts space, the lighting bar design was to deliver on both functionalities to support performances and compliment the surrounding space’s aesthetic.
Durbach Block Jaggers main approach was achieving a balance between the lighting bar as a statement and how this would sit against the surrounding space and complexity of the timber cladding.
The product design concept sketch provided by Durbach Block Jaggers was strongly influenced by the brand identity developed for Phoenix Gallery.
Delivering on this intent required considered application of the industrial design process and utilisation of advanced manufacturing processes.
Working from the architect’s conceptual documentation, Tilt developed a detailed 3D CAD model which was used to ensure lighting hardware could successfully be integrated, and structural engineering parameters were properly considered.
At the same time, installation and disassembly procedures were considered for ongoing use of the product.
A range of material and manufacturing processes were explored in order to better understand the risks and opportunities and to ensure we could deliver on the intended aesthetic without compromising on the structural design criteria.
Prototyping was a crucial step in the design path to confirm material choices, finishes and manufacturing method and tolerances.
The intent was to create the visual perception that the lighting bar is created from a single piece of metal, a challenge given the scale of the element, and the need for it to be assembled from multiple elements.
The development of a high tolerance manufacturing process was necessary to ensure the multiple components could be successfully assembled in an exacting form, whilst delivering on the strict engineering requirements.
Durbach Block Jaggers main approach was achieving balance between the lighting bar as a statement and how this would sit against the surrounding space and complexity of the timber cladding.
The circular lighting bar measures 6.3m in diameter, a bolted assembly of 12 major aluminium sections, each section comprising of 4 smaller individual components.
The aluminium sections were electroplated and treated to achieve the brass patina finish.
The final design also accommodated cable management and the counterbalance bob weights.
