Project details
2023
Client: Indesign Media
Team: Tilt and Spike Deane
Photography: IndesignTilt was invited to partner with Indesign on the 2023 INDE.Awards trophy. With a shared vision of celebrating design excellence, Tilt began the creative process to craft a trophy that would embody the spirit of the INDE.Awards and serve as an enduring symbol of distinction.

Background
Tilt approached the brief with the same rigour as with any client project, however this time, the process began with an internal ideation competition within the design team. The concepts were presented and voted on, and further refinements and iterations produced the winning design by Design Manager, Alex Wong.
Inspiration for Alex’s design was drawn from the landscape of the Blue Mountains, with a reference to the symbiotic relationship of design and architecture. The central point of the trophy has a twisted form, referencing the intersection of the two disciplines. Each trophy has 17 ripples at its centre, symbolising the 17 INDE.Award categories.

Tilt Process
The trophy fabrication began with a 3D printed model which was then used to create ceramic moulds. Glass was then poured into the moulds, with a pot-melt technique used to create the colour gradient in the glass. After six days of oven curing, the glass trophies were extracted from their moulds and polished by hand, while preserving some process marks to reveal its handmade quality.
Alex’s fundamental concept was deeply embedded in blending the artisan craft of glass making and modern digital processes. The production of the trophies drew expertise from digital modelling, 3D printing and prototyping, and hand finishing, to create precision with the richness of hand-cast glass. Alex collaborated with artist, Spike Deane, from Canberra Glassworks to develop the colour variation and sanding techniques that would produce the final surface finish.
“Each trophy was crafted with its own 3D mould, and while digitally made, the glass pour ensure that every trophy was unique.” Wong continues, “I also wanted to keep the notion of multiple hands that touch the design, much like architectural projects, where many people work together to present a well-resolved finished project.”

Outcome
Creating the trophies provided an opportunity for Tilt to explore creativity and innovation with their tried and tested industrial design process. The trophies, awarded as a symbol of excellence in creativity and design, were received by the winners with curiosity and delight on their unique and timeless form.

“The INDE.Awards are a significant celebration of design and architecture, and TILT was honoured to partner with Indesign to create this year’s trophy. We pride ourselves on developing innovative and unique design outcomes, and creating the trophy provided our team with the perfect opportunity to reflect on the principles we follow every day, to create an enduring legacy for the INDE.Awards.”
