A gum tree themed inclusive play area custom designed for Frasers Property's latest development in Western Sydney – Ed.Square town centre. A concept based on positive psychology and play.
Fraser’s Property group engaged Tilt, in collaboration with Three Fishes, to develop the bespoke indoor play area for the Ed.Square Town Centre project. The play space features a range of imaginative and challenging play opportunities for children.
All components of the play space echo an Australian native Gum tree, bringing nature play indoors.
Filled with discovery points and mimicking unstructured outdoor play, the play space combines colours, sensory materials and experiences to bring the outside experience indoors.
The play space concept prepared by Three Fishes presented a strong focus on positive psychology and unique developmental play opportunities. A custom-designed play space was desirable to provide the best possible site-specific experience for visitors to the centre.
The play space concept featured a number of suspended play pod elements that would require technical and clever design development to deliver.
As such Tilt was engaged to detail the design and certification process, manage fabrication and installation.
The play structure’s most intriguing features are the large gum nut pods suspended from the ceiling, which host climbing rope tunnels and slides.
The surrounding space has mixed play elements and spaces catering to different age groups and provides diverse learning opportunities.
Elements in the play space include:
The concept of suspending multiple play elements from the ceiling presented a range of design challenges.
The supporting structural frame and the development of the related hanging elements required careful planning and execution to ensure safety and compliance were achieved.
The diverse range of play elements required a holistic approach to the project, with Tilt assuming contractual responsibility for not only the bespoke hero pieces but the complete fit-out of the internal space, including walls, floors, and ceilings.
The custom-designed play space provides various play elements for children to explore and navigate – addressing the theme throughout and providing nature inspired play.
Being indoors, the play space is an all-weather space for children to be active while increasing the shopping centre’s footprint and providing a must-visit destination to Ed.Square town centre.
“The playground intentionally provides an array of challenges of different levels to meet the varying needs of children. Components such as the rock climbing wall & the slides – all these pose challenges to children of varying ages & abilities. We have also included quieter, passive play elements for the childrens who prefer more of an imaginative play scenario. The kaleidoscope room & the secret tunnels provide areas for children to still play in their own way through story & imagination.” – Kate Mackarell, Three Fishes
