Flow, Fold is a large-scale monochromatic public artwork by artist Georgia Hill that is bold and contemporary, creating a striking backdrop for one of Alexandria's a high traffic zones.
The large-scale artwork consists of a mural overlaid with a series of three-dimensional aluminium sculptures, representing the artist’s interpretation of Alexandria’s historical, technological, and geographical background. It is featured on the southern façade of the Equinix Data Centre building, located on Gardeners Road at a busy industrial site in Alexandria.
Mural patterns and the repetition of concentric circles illustrate the concept of ‘Flow’ and communicate the experience of the evolving suburb. The idea of ‘Fold’ is personified by aluminium sheets, symbolising paper materials that document our lives and shared histories. These three-dimensional aluminium sculptures depict the folded aspect of the paper, representing reconnecting and acknowledging our history and future.
Lighting has been integrated into the artwork to enhance the play of shadow and depths of the folds and to illuminate the building’s façade for evening viewing by the community.
Tilt worked with Georgia from concept through to installation and supported her in translating the maquettes into a set of mixed materials suitable for the site and budget. Early paper folding experiments by the artist helped to inform the geometry of the fabricated aluminium layer.
The artwork comprises 110 sqm of 6mm aluminium sheets, folded and manipulated to give the impression of paper forms. Tilt fixed these sculptural forms directly to the building façade through a steel subframe.
We worked closely with the artist’s team to develop the 3D forms and to work out how these could tie in with the overall concept and mural design. Our team worked with the large 3D forms, understanding their scale and resolving what was possible for these forms through engineering. This resulted in successfully designing a neat and clean solution that allowed the budget to stretch further across the façade.
Working with the builder, we also coordinated the integration of the lighting with the artwork.
The dynamically graphic and impactful artwork renders the community a vibrant streetscape and visual interest within a high-traffic and pedestrian zone. Bold and sympathetic to the environment, Flow, Fold transforms throughout the day to be appreciated by the community at all hours.
“Through research and site visits, consistent themes of community, connection and time became the clear focus of this artwork. Rather than leaning on literal visualisations of the past, present and future, these themes led me to create ‘Flow, Fold’, a deeply abstracted artwork that reveals the movement of community, connections, and change over time.”
