Frasers Property's new Eastern Creek Quarter features an Australian-first' revolving retail' concept as part of their entertainment precinct 'ECQ Social.' Within the activated outdoor space features a custom-designed playground conceptualised by Arcadia Landscape Architects.
Arcadia’s concept called for organic form pod play structures. The structures were to be elevated from the ground plane and act as the connectors between play elements.
Tilt was initially engaged in completing a design study to review the concept and assess the feasibility of construction and core playground compliance.
We were then engaged to manage the detailed design, construction, and installation – considering site integration, user experience, materiality, safety, and ease of ongoing maintenance.
The curved and laminated timber beams create a playful and natural linear exterior for the pod play structures, complementing the outdoor landscape’s retail centers.
Safety and compliance were paramount throughout the design phase, and Tilt managed the client’s certification process.
3D CAD modelling through to site integration assessments.
Custom pod play structure reflecting the parkland surrounds, and activating the space.
The custom designed pods provide a unique aesthetic and are coupled with a range of proprietary play elements to deliver an engaging play experience for a range of ages.
Rope climbers, a tunnel experience, slide, log steppers, and a fireman’s pole all contribute to the overall play and adventure experience.
Arcadia has enjoyed collaborating with Tilt across many projects, but most recently on the playground at Eastern Creek Quarter. From the earliest stages of a project, the Tilt team ensures there is clarity to the process so that everyone’s clear on deliverables and timeframes.
Through all phases of the concept to construction journey, the engineering and design team were diligent in meeting every deadline. Their broad understanding of different materials and engineering capabilities helped us deliver the best result possible for an unconventional geometry while staying true to the design intent. In particular, we were able to work together to overcome a structural issue, and the Tilt team’s innovative approach was key to the solution.
By bending Accoya wood, with its stability capabilities and sustainably sourced material, we were able to ensure minimal environmental impact, while delivering a robust and playful playground that brings the concept from paper to life.
