Builder: Toki Construction
Interior Design: Interni
Landscape Design: Dangar Barin Smith
Structural Engineer: Partridge
A masterful blend of contemporary elegance with functional living, this home is built for modern family life. Working closely with the owners to create a thoughtful and considered design, Stanic Harding has delivered an exceptional home that matches the needs of a young, vibrant family.
Nestled in the quiet streets of Double Bay, this modern home takes full advantage of its North-facing orientation by flooding the home and garden with warmth and light. The layout embraces an outdoor lifestyle with its seamless connection to the alfresco space, offering versatility and unrestricted living.
The building’s position creates a bright, light-filled experience but also exposes the home to the harsh sun and street visibility. To combat this, a series of custom louvres and screens were designed to provide thermal performance and shield the home from the street view.
Responding to the property’s Northerly aspect and street visibility, Stanic Harding specified custom operable louvres and screens on two adjoining facades. Providing privacy and ultimate control over sunlight entering the house, the horizontal louvres and perforated vertical screens combine beauty and function with the latest smart technology.
Two banks of five perforated aluminium screens are installed on the first floor facade to shield the bedrooms from the sun and street view. On the adjacent facade, three 4-metre ellipsoid aluminium louvres fill a window, providing additional tailored lighting and privacy.
Tilt’s expert engineers designed a fully adjustable actuation mechanism between the screens that allowed for custom positioning. The operable louvres and screens are connected to sophisticated controls, that integrate with the home automation system allowing for reactive response to external lighting conditions.
To preserve the architectural vision for a sleek, refined design, all fixings and mechanisms were designed to be fully concealed. The technical accuracy of this project allowed for very fine tolerances across shadow lines, joins and the mechanical operation, adding to the engineering complexity.
Tilt’s specialised team ensured the perforated screens’ actuators were embedded within a 30mm outer frame, allowing for a very small 0.5mm gap tolerance, while the the outer sleeve was installed across a curved surface within a precise 2mm tolerance.
The entire building envelope is crafted with bespoke componentry, including the louvres and screens. Every part included in the louvres, screens and outer sleeve were unique and manufactured specifically for this project. All parts were made and installed on-site to adhere to the exact measurements of the building.
The collaboration of skills across this project included mechanical and mechatronic engineers as well industrial designers to refine the architectural concept. Working alongside builders, Toki Construction, the teams worked concurrently to realise Stanic Harding’s residential masterpiece.
