Inspired by the rich agricultural history of the Parramatta region, 'Cloud Seeds' is a collection of delicately crafted porcelain plants suspended in resin-filled clear tubes and illuminated with golden light. By heroing various types of seeds and flowers, the artists recognised the importance of agriculture to First Nations inhabitants and later generations of colonial settlers.
The public art strategy developed by Authority Creative, invited artists to submit concepts in response to the social, cultural and environmental influences of the region. Milne & Stonehouse were selected for their bold and unique response to the brief that enhanced the building’s aesthetic and created a striking streetscape.
‘Cloud Seeds’ is a sculptural lighting display installed into the soffit ceiling at the entrance of ‘Charlie Parker’, one of Parramatta’s first build-to-rent residences. The diverse community of Parramatta and future residents of Charlie Parker are reflected through the variety of species in the artwork. Each seed and flower is uniquely its own; however, as a collective, they are unified and create a community.
The artwork creates a dazzling welcome for residents and with its street visibility, draws curiosity from passers-by. Its exposure to the street blurs the line between a building asset and artwork in the public realm. It is an artwork destination and provides cultural value and public amenity for the wider community.
Tilt supported Milne & Stonehouse with detailed design including structural engineering and prototyping, site integration and shop drawings, assembly of 200 porcelain objects, plus onsite assembly and project administration.
As the Parramatta region grows, it is fast becoming Sydney’s new beating heart with its mix of amenities. Charlie Parker takes full advantage of its proximity Parramatta’s CBD with its premium build-to-rent tower, allowing residents to live and work locally. The new level of luxury at Charlie Parker is enhanced with the sophistication of the Cloud Seeds artwork – injecting personality and creating a destination in Parramatta’s public art trail. Charlie Parker is a glimpse into what our future cities can be, where live, work and play come together.
“The artwork is complex in detail, yet it floats seamlessly as a welcoming gesture to the building. The artwork process required rigorous workshop research into the casting, lighting and how all the elements came together as a finished installation. We chose to work with Tilt as they are committed to nurturing the artistic vision to realise the artwork in imaginative ways.”
