CAMDEN, NSW | GUNDUNGURRA, THARAWAL, DHARUG
2024
Client: Camden Council
Artists: Mcclellanddrew, Graham Chalcroft, Peter Day
Photography: Brett Atkins, courtesy of Camden Council
A reclaimed dairy farm bequeathed to Camden Council has been reinvented as a community recreation space, providing cultural connection and public amenity. Now known as Camden Town Farm, the 52-hectare space was funded as part of the NSW Government Public Spaces Legacy project and Camden Council to provide a public green space for locals and ensure its rich history lives on.
Camden Town Farm traces the Nepean River and links five walking trails, including the Camden Public Art Trail. The art trail features the work of 15 artists through a meandering journey across a picturesque and accessible public walkway. The works depict local history and the lives of locals in a bygone era, expressing the rich influence of agriculture, community and First Nations residents.
Tilt was invited to support artists Mcclellanddrew, Graham Chalcroft and Peter Day, with detailed design of their concepts, and manage the fabrication and installation of their artworks.
With extensive experience working with artists, Tilt developed the artists’ concepts through detailed design and provided advice on surface patterns and materials. To ensure a robust and safe installation Tilt provided structural design for the artwork, mechanical components and methodologies. By working through various templates and ‘non-structural’ skin options (material surface) Tilt was able to find the best approach for the artworks.

McClellandDrew’s Sit awhile… evokes an early area of Camden. Placing objects of domestic familiarity in the public realm. Representing historic artefacts translated into art. Visitors recognise the historical artefacts in a new cultural context.

Galvanised corten and stainless steel and kinetic feature
An interpretation of the Camden White Gum located along the banks of the Nepean River. The White Gum, a threatened species, grows to a majestic 40m height, Chalcroft uses kinetic motion and sculptural form to reflect the rhythms of wind through tree canopies and the flow of the Nepean River.

The Farm Gate celebrates rural life by commemorating the historical agricultural land and lifestyle inspired by Camden Community Garden and Produce Market, celebrating the tradition of market gardens on Miss Davies Farm. The sculpture expresses and explores Peter’s thoughts and feelings on landscape, the environment, culture, and society.
Camden Public Art Trail is the result of successful partnership between community and Council to create an engaging and valuable legacy for Camden. Weaving the history of the past into the landscape through the artworks harnesses the history of the region and ensures the stories will endure. The wider Nepean River Trail is a place for active and passive recreation and helps to bind the community with a meeting place and a deep connection to the land.
