With a devotion to the ancient artistry of terracotta, Burnt Earth Beach House celebrates materiality and functionality for a multi-generational family home.
The original home, overlooking Anglesea’s cliff edges, was half destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bush fires and its location was further compromised by an old landslip from the 1920’s. The tired cottage was cleared to make way for this masterful design by Wardle that draws on the elements of the earth as its inspiration.
Burnt earth, or terracotta, has long been the hero of many Wardle projects, and this residential home provided the opportunity to explore its materiality further. The hand-crafted bricks of the home’s exterior were crafted by infusing glaze with raw clay to echo the gnarly sea cliffs of the Anglesea coastline, while smooth Italian terracotta bricks line the internal walls of the home.
The home’s key element is its aspect to views and light, which informed its x-shape. The house is a family holiday home, so social spaces were also key to its layout. The intersection of the x-shape is the kitchen; the hub of the home, which opens out onto the generous deck with two-fold awnings. The awnings are the result of a successful collaboration with Wardle and Tilt, and provide a seamless connection the outdoors. The awnings, clad in timber battens, have a secondary operable component, delivering more airflow and light into the space while providing shade from the northerly sun.
Wardle’s brief specified large shade awnings to control light and ventilation in the central living space of the home. The awnings operate with a tilt-up two-stage mechanism, providing a custom automated solution. Tilt has extensive prior experience with similar awning projects, which influenced the Wardle brief and delivered a tailored solution that complements the home’s connection to nature.
Burnt Earth Beach House is a unique and unpretentious masterpiece, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and a bold exploration of new ways to express materiality and modern family life. The deliberately paired-back floor plan creates a calm space, and the home’s respect for nature and the landscape allows it to seamlessly blend with its surroundings. Thoughtful details across every corner of the home, including the operable awnings, demonstrate a deep understanding of the forces of nature and how these elements can be optimised for comfort, function and style.
‘The home embodies a lifetime of honing formal and spatial language and a delight in drilling into detail.’
