Tilt developed a bespoke glass staircase and landing for a one-of-a-kind entry which provides a seamless connection for the three levels of the already constructed home.
Working alongside the client and Interior designer, Tilt provided a range of conceptual designs for the staircase – this involved detailed technical advice on materiality, manufacturing options, and engineering parameters.
The concepts Tilt developed in response to the brief demanded a modern aesthetic, a truly unique design concept, and an elevated finish in all workmanship.
As an element responding to the existing interior palette and renovation conditions, the project presented a range of complex challenges in design and structural integration.
A core objective for the product was to utilise triple laminated glass treads. Transparency in the design was considered paramount to support bringing natural light into the home to improve liveability.
The stairs feature a unique anti-slip pattern which was integrated into the glass treads to ensure compliance with relevant safety standards.
We worked closely with specialised fabricators to achieve a beautifully crafted finish for the solid, clear glass treads. Reflecting light and supporting the glass steps, the stainless outriggers perform a critical structural role and contribute to the overall aesthetic feature.
The mirror-polished stainless-steel finish of the outriggers introduces a high level of manufacturing detail and further increases the design’s visual transparency.
Before committing to production, individual components of the initial design were developed in 3D CAD before the prototype was designed.
Prototyping ensured functionality and visual performance were met before committing to production – this was a key step in ensuring manufacturing quality could be achieved.
Tilt presented a range of concepts that would utilise advanced manufacturing materials and processes that reflected the client’s contemporary aspirations for a beautifully unique product in response to the client’s brief.
Amongst an art-filled home, the staircase was developed as a sculptural installation of its own. Our client was involved throughout the entire design process, from the conceptualisation stages through to on-site installation.
The transparency of the staircase emerges as a key design statement. The glass alludes to a perception of enlarged space – allowing light to shift through the internal spaces depending on the time of the day.
