Refined aesthetic combined with commercial functionality. Each custom designed door is unique in purpose and performance.
Utilising an industrial design approach, Tilt developed each element to the architects exacting requirements, detailing the design and managing manufacturing, installation and commissioning.
We approached the range of large format doors as complete products rather than a collection of trade packages. This ensured the unique designs would integrate with the building interface harmoniously.
Each architecturally designed door designed for Phoenix Central Park required multiple trades. Including structural engineering, fire services, steel fabrication, carpentry, glazing and finishes.
Due to these critical requirements a traditional procurement approach was not possible.
The front entry door had a complex brief. The door had precise requirements for security and fire services whilst also acting as the front entry to the clients home.
The entry door comprised of both complex geometry and mixed materials. Detailing of the door was important in ensuring that the feature provided an appropriate statement within the overarching building façade.
Special design attention was given to the front door handle. As the primary interface, operation and ergonomics influence the experience of using the door.
Ensuring these aspects were thoroughly considered during the design process was of importance. With the architect, Tilt followed an iterative design process which included sketching, 3D modelling and 3D printing. Casting in bronze prior to committing to production.
Extensive in scale, the series of art hanging doors provide a canvas for the art to be hung holding up to 500kg.
The finish of these doors is designed to look seamless, like an extension of the gallery space.
Providing spatial and practical access to the basement from street level, the car lift entry door represents a combination of critical safety, engineering balanced with aesthetics.
Continuing the form and architectural language from the main entrance, the car lift door offers a sculptural outcome for what is typically an architecturally compromised industrial aesthetic.
Designed for the bespoke courtyard doors to be integrated, these architectural reveals were technically challenging due to the 7m spans (larger than a single sheet of steel). The architectural plans conceptualised steel ribs to hold the reveals in place but did not account for fabrication of the reveals at that scale.
Tilt worked closely with the structural engineer and fabricator to develop a fabrication technique that would both manage distortion and avoid visible weld details. The result, an innovative fabrication process.
Many of the doors retained unique technical requirements. These included automation, security, fire services and BMS integration. The performance criteria stipulated that the doors must also be both intuitive, easy to use, and reliable.
