Kinetic art installation underway for Sydney School – AD ASTRA by Marion Borgelt
Marion Borgelt’s kinetic sculpture AD ASTRA is a significant commissioning for St Catherine’s School’s new RPCA Building — the motion of the artwork to transform the building’s entrance.

The sculpture will be architecturally integrated and suspended from the ceiling of the main foyer and will consist of families of brightly coloured and intersecting discs.
The subtle and circular movement of the artwork will result from the natural airflow in the building. Borgelt and Tilt were engaged as an artist team to deliver the artistic vision and manage the complex design challenges and ensure successful site integration.
Marion Borgelt is represented by Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert Borgelt’s vision for the artwork is to
“represent the many universal values, particularly the core values, that exemplify St Catherine’s educational philosophy—those being Service, Integrity, Respect, Resilience, and Relationships.
AD ASTRA introduces two suspended forms whose interplay examines relationships and how people and groups interact at the basic level of two—the minimum number of entities required for a relationship. These are the fundamental building blocks of a community.
Influenced by the stars of the Southern Cross on St Catherine’s crest, the sculpture employs a combination of deep ultramarine blue and bright citrus yellow and bronze to create an experience of stars and night. In this context AD ASTRA becomes an uplifting expression inspiring excellence and embodying the principles outlined by St Catherine’s.”
Tilt has been developing the concept with a focus on delivering a gallery level of refinement in the work at a grand scale.
Through the application of detailed 3D modelling, prototyping, and the selection of various advanced manufacturing materials and processes we will ensure the artistic outcome achieves the artists typical high level of refinement.
