Artworks for New Sydney Fish Market Unveiled
-
The new Sydney Fish Market hosts a cultural journey into the Saltwater People Stories through a series of First Nations artworks. Depicting ancient fishing practices and cultural knowledge passed down to the Artists, they express a deep reverence for nature.
The first three artworks were celebrated last week with the Artists, unveiling the inspiration behind the Blackwattle Bay artworks. ‘The Nawi’ by Uncle Steven Russell, ‘Birrang Narrami (Star Net)’ by Nadeena Dixon and ‘The Call of Ngura (Country)’ by Leanne Tobin are created in bronze and pay homage to their ancestral wisdom.

At the foundry of project partner Australian Bronze, an illuminated display demonstrated the bronze pouring process used to create each artwork. Once installed, the artworks will be placed at the eastern and western ends of the promenade at the new Sydney Fish Market.
Through a collaborative process with long-term curatorial partners, Cultural Capital, Tilt worked with the Artists to support the delivery of their works and create these important public legacies. This project is an initiative of the NSW Government and will see the new Sydney Fish Market as a new icon of Sydney, founded on the enduring resilience of the world’s oldest living culture.
