  • Architectural roof access skylight, Boston

  • Architectural skylight, Boston USA

Tilt was approached by the Monte French Design Studio, a Boston-based architect, looking for a design solution to a frequent problem: roof access for a residential property.

  • Morris Island is a tranquil oasis of woodlands, wetlands, and a wildlife refuge on the southern end of Chatham, Massachusetts. Offering traditional Cape-style homes and contemporary designs, residences are built with both luxury and natural surroundings in mind.

The home features a lounge seating area on the rooftop, perfect for relaxing afternoons with a drink to enjoy the view. However, the rooftop access point lies within a narrow hallway inside, making a standard, permanent staircase impossible.

An annex-style pulldown ladder was deemed unsuitable, its steeper access compromising usability and making carrying food and drinks to the rooftop entertaining area with ease and safety difficult.

  • Monte French and their builders were a long way through the design and documentation process before

Tilt became involved and knew exactly the function and aesthetic they required. Their ability to provide the unique geometry specifications of the site in addition to the finishes they required meant the skylight could be designed and built-in Australia then shipped to Massachusetts without the need for a site visit.

The architect’s confidence in Tilt’s capability meant the building team was confident in delivering the Australian designed skylight and their ability to integrate it into the site.
The mid-century modern home is now complete, ready for holidays and rooftop entertaining for years to come.
