Cleverly designed operable roofs and facades, increasing the value proposition for hospitality providers
The hospitality industry is seeing a positive recovery post-pandemic, with outdoor dining set to become a more permanent feature in this space.
-
Whilst outdoor dining or function areas allow owners to maximise floor space – managing the climate control of these spaces can be a bit more complex.
Architects, developers, and hospitality owners are increasingly looking to industrial designers such as Tilt to deliver custom operable roof and façade solutions that allow venues to operate at maximum capacity in all-weather condition – whilst maintaining the buildings architectural vision and managing climate control compliance.

Allowing for maximum capacity in all-weather conditions
One such transformation was for Tequila Mockingbird – a unique Latin-American restaurant in the heart of Paddington Sydney.
Tilt’s custom design of a retractable roof enabled the venue to convert its dining space into an open-air courtyard, transforming from a cosy, fully-enclosed space into an atmospheric alfresco dining area.
Aesthetics were an important consideration for Tilt, ensuring that the roof design specifically upheld and suited the architectural intent of the building with the one-touch control system enabling the roof to stop in any position.
-
“Having the operable roof gives us a point of difference to most venues – it has that wow factor and changes the whole dynamic of a small venue,” said Tequila Mockingbird Director, Michael Fegent.
“We’re able to book out the entire venue without having to worry about it raining, while having the flexibility to offer an ambient open-air courtyard space during fine weather,” he added.

Responding to the building’s environment
Environmental conditions require architects to consider responsive solutions for their buildings.
Tilt collaborated with Technē Architecture + Interior Design to produce a custom 200-square-metre glass operable roof for St Kilda’s historic Village Belle Hotel. The large operable roof is responsive to the surrounding area’s climatic and acoustic conditions.

Increasing the venues capacity
With the addition of a custom roof access skylight for Bulli’s trending cafe and bar, ‘The Fitz’ joined the indoor/outdoor space, presenting almost double the dining capacity while redeeming additional natural light and ventilation throughout.

Opening onto escarpment views, this rooftop access skylight provides a unique extension from street level to a stunning rooftop dining experience for patrons.
-
Considering the comfort of patrons
The operable façade protects patrons from the sun and provides uninterrupted views of the ocean.
The unique design retains the character of the building while considering the comfort of patrons – a combination that results in the greatest commercial success.

Designing for flexible spaces whilst managing Section J compliance
A revolution in retractable roofing systems is currently nearing completion, on Level 24 of a commercial tower, with the dining experience being optimised by a single-piece retractable roof.
The newly developed operable roof system can transform to a fully enclosed and section J compliant indoor, air conditioned area.
This new approach largely increases the value proposition for commercial building owners with hospitality opportunities – offering the very best of conditions for patrons in all weather environments, whilst maintaining section J compliance for commercial indoor spaces.
