The prestigious awards give a platform for Good Design Australia to showcase superior examples of design across a broad range of industries, with the aim to create a better world through intelligent design.A panel of industry experts judged all entries, with rigorous evaluation based on a set of criteria. The Heliostat and Reflector System attained its award due to its outstanding form, function, safety, sustainability, quality, commerciality and innovation.

The system was designed and engineered by Tilt (formerly Kennovations) in 2011-12 and then commissioned throughout 2013-14 as a cornerstone architectural element of the One Central Park development located in Broadway, Sydney.

“The project in its early stages began with technical feasibility assessments and conceptual designs,” said Tim Phillips, Director of Tilt  “We only had ideas and drawings at the time, but after a lengthy process of development and construction we delivered a ground-breaking technology system that was also aesthetically pleasing.”

The use of heliostat systems for architectural applications is an emerging technology that allows sunlight to be distributed into shaded areas using motorised heliostats that track the sun and redirect light. Within One Central Park, there are 40 heliostats powered by sun-tracking technology that reflect light onto 320 mirror panels.

Awards were announced on May 29 against a spectacular backdrop of lights, music and fireworks at the Dockside Pavillion Sydney. 700 guests gathered to celebrate the winners’ success including the Tilt designers and engineers who were involved in the project.
