The building is a response to the recent urbanisation of the south-western edge of Sydney CBD and plays a pivotal role in the local urban regeneration – a brief which fjmt studio’s design exceeded expectations and has also revived and connected seamlessly to architect Michael Dysart’s imposing 1969 ‘brutalist’ Building.

Tilt’s UTS Sun Shading System is an architectural feature of the building, the operable element has “108 louvres that manage sunlight entering the north-facing library and reading room. Their leaf-like character is consistent with fjmtstudio’s overall aesthetic for the building.”

Tilt coordinated the design by commissioning Parametric Monkey to provide computational modelling and design-to-fabrication services. This enabled exploration of a range of possible outcomes rapidly while controlling specific parameters of the design. By taking this unique approach to detailed design and manufacturing and embracing this evolving digital technology, Tilt were able to manage complex geometries that would traditionally require hundreds of hours to detail.

Tilt managed design, manufacture and install of the intricate sun shading system – a unique business model in itself.  Tilt’s Managing Director, Tim Phillips states it’s “about managing risk, managing cost and developing relationships with builders” which “gives architects a licence to be creative”.
