Meet Tilt’s Alex Backler, Design Manager
Meet Alex – design extraordinaire, problem solver and team leader. Recently promoted to Design Manager, Alex has worked with Tilt in delivering successful and innovative projects for nearly 4 years.
-
Alex works closely with clients to develop their concept and better understand their intent, working through any pragmatic challenges that evolve during the design process.
His profound evaluating skills allow him to translate complex information from other disciplines, including engineering, architectural, artistic and construction, into a form more easily understood within the existing project requirements so the client can make informed decisions.
We talk to Alex about his new role and some of his most challenging and rewarding projects to date.
A typical week at Tilt;
A typical week involves investigating a client’s concept and developing an overarching solution or working through various individual elements of a concept. This can be through design meetings, brainstorming, or a better understanding of the context through CAD or site visits. Once some initial ideas have been solidified, we proceed with detailed design – modelling a detailed version for continued development.
Parallel to this initial process is often material and research documentation followed by pricing and timeline updates to ensure our key deliverables are clearly defined for our client in the onset.
At Tilt, the application of Industrial Design sets us apart to achieve and deliver complex and innovative outcomes.
Alex explains – the broad foundation of Industrial design provides a specialist set of knowledge and perspectives. This outlook is critical to fulfilling the design intent to the highest level possible – often saving time, fulfilling budgetary requirements, and finding the right balance for all stakeholders involved.
What has been a project that has provided the most challenging and rewarding outcome?
The Sun Shading System at UTS Central was quite challenging in bringing the architects – fjmt studio ambitious concept into reality. This included an in-depth development process and prototyping stage consultation with many different stakeholders.
The fabrication and installation was also quite an undertaking, with a high volume of parts and considerable complexity – along with a unique site context as we installed the 108 individual modules in-between two glass facades across three levels of the new building within a tight timeline.
Sustainability also a key goal for the project, with the Sun Shading System not only contributing aesthetic value but helping to achieving a 5 green star energy performance rating from the the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) – a rewarding outcome for UTS, fjmt and Tilt to reducing environmental impact and innovate within the façade space.

How is the site integration encompassed within the design process?
Site visits are valuable in understanding the broader impacts of design choices conceptually. The arrangement, process, or installation method can considerably influence the install and long-term maintenance time. Scale is often hard to judge in CAD, particularly connection points or intricate details. Site visits provide greater visualisation and end-user experience.
Alex shares a passionate driver that has contributed to his career growth
The key motivator that has pathed my success is the fulfilment of exceeding the expectations of a client. Whether a small pragmatic or technical detail or an entire concept – to deliver something that is otherwise believed to be impossible to achieve.
How do you spend your weekends?
In my spare time, I freelance as a DJ attending music gigs and other artistic events. I play ‘Ultimate Frisbee’ and also like table tennis and spike ball.
I also enjoy an epic film, a good book and some philosophy and theology to consider the deeper things in life!
