City of Darwin
A playground where art and play are truly interlaced
Client – Milne & Stonehouse
Creative Producer – The Free Space Studio (Arts Access Darwin)
Client – City of Darwin
A playscape featuring integrated public artworks influencing a connection of place and imaginative play, revitalising the former urban space.
The City of Darwin, in partnership with children’s charity Variety NT and the National Disability Insurance Agency, contributed together to provide a new play space that is welcoming, inclusive, and accessible.
This playspace was reimagined and developed to break the boundaries of a traditional play space in a site-specific response—the overall design required to offer a functional, imaginative space for all ages and physical capacities.
Public art consultants Milne & Stonehouse, worked closely with 6 local artists from Free Space Studio – an accessible visual arts studio for artists with disabilities – to integrate art throughout the playground design.
Milne & Stonehouse engaged Tilt to provide a detailed design review – provided as an illustrative sketch form – to resolve integration and design challenges and bring to life a constructed playspace.
The playground is formed around two large ant nest pods, with elements of play that are both custom and proprietary.
Throughout the design development process Tilt provided 3D CAD modelling services which facilitated the ongoing review and consideration of the playspace compliance requirements and its integration into the site.
With a focus on protecting the client’s original intent, Tilt was also responsible for supporting procurement, construction and installation – working with our clients selected fabricators and engineers as well as supporting the regulatory compliance requirements for the project.
